What Is a Roller Chain?

When to Replace a Roller Chain?

When looking for wear and tear on a roller chain, look for the following signs: elongation, sag, and pitch. The wear of your chain can be measured with sag and pitch measuring instrument or a Vernier caliper. A Vernier caliper measures the distance between the rollers and helps you identify the signs of wear and tear.

Proper lubrication and tension are important. The sag should be between two and four percent of the center distance, which is the distance between the sprockets. A worn or loose roller chain may also have visible damage or make unusual noises. 

Measure the distance between the inner plates of the sprocket and the outer surface of the roller. You need to measure the distance, add all the numbers and divide it by the number of times you have measured it. For example, 1+1+1 divided by 3. After that, you need to multiply it by the number of links in the chain. Lastly, you need to find the percentage of the elongation by dividing it by 100.

If you are unsure of the exact length of the roller chain, use a laser pointer to locate misalignments. The first step in replacing your roller chain is measuring its length. You can also measure the elongation rate of the chain by looking at the tight span. Usually, manufacturers recommend a maximum of three percent elongation rate. If you exceed that percentage, you should replace your roller chains.
